The New Mexico School of Mines was established by a legislative act in 1889 (1889 Laws of N.M., Chp. 138, Sec. 1). In 1951 a legislative act changed the name to New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (1951 Laws of N.M., Chp. 46, Sec. 1).
